Exercise: Fitness Versus Weight Loss

One of the great controversies in exercise for weight loss is this: which is better—shorter but more intense
exercise sessions or longer and less intense sessions? Today we have programs such as P90X and Insanity that
are extremely intense, and we have more moderate approaches such as walking 10,000 steps per day. Which
helps to lose more weight? I’ve found a research paper that gives us a better understanding than ever before, and
that’s what I’ll be covering this week.
One of the problems with answering this question is that studies don’t look at enough subjects; they use a few
training programs of different intensity and compare those with sedentary controls. That’s okay, but it’s difficult to
generalize from that research. In addition, there’s usually significant loss of subjects because they quit exercising.

But the HUNT Study was different. The study was called Nord-Trøndelag Health Study but HUNT for short—how,
I have no idea. Maybe it was lost in translation.
Researchers invited every adult from a county in Norway to participate in a health survey. In order to examine
fitness parameters, researchers invited a representative sample from four cities in the county to participate in
additional testing, including a graded exercise test to exhaustion. In some cases, the subjects did not reach
exhaustion before stopping so they chose to call it VO2 Peak instead of VO2 Max.
The researchers tested over 4,500 men and women of all ages. They used a validated physical activity survey to
determine the intensity, duration, and frequency of the subjects’ typical activity. I’m not a fan of these surveys but
in this case, if the subjects lied, it would show up in their fitness test.
What did the researchers find? I’ll let you know the rest of the week.

What are you prepared to do today?
